Well the last five months has been an emotional roller coaster…..
I decided to put myself forward for a trained figure comp this year back in April 2008’. Its something that I’ve always wanted to do, but I’ve never got round to it… My cousin s currently the British Champion for the over 50’s, he’s been nagging me for years to have a go, I’ve never plucked up the courage.
I bit the bullet and phoned up the NPA[ Natural Physique Association], I spoke to the organisers and they advised me to speak to Figure Girl PT- ‘Ian Duckett’, from my initial meeting with Ian…. I haven’t looked back.

YES….. I knew what I was doing,
YES….. I knew what to eat…after all I’ve spent the last 12 years showing people how do to these things myself, but it really was the next level up the ladder for me… seeking the help of an expert to take my training and diet to the next level…
I trained and still train 3 times per week for 1 hour; over the first 5 week period I dieted and trained 3 x 1 hour workouts. My workouts were boot camp style; working upper and lower body in the same sessions, mainly working super sets style with many repetitions on one body part, with another body part e.g Chest / Back to achieve ultimate overload.
I attended 1-2 session’s with my PT per month; with regular checks on posing and transitions. I also attended an afternoon posing clinic with Ian , to make sure I knew the standard poses and compulsory poses. I felt confident and I looked pretty good despite only having 5 weeks of training,[having good conditioning before I started must have helped the transition to the next level.
After meeting a few girls at the posing clinic, they gave me the inspiration to enter my first show a week later.. my 1st show was on 1st June 2008 – NPA Yorkshire, I placed 3rd from 10 girls and also clinched the Best Presentation trophy….. I came aware happy , but disappointed as I didn’t realise how much I wanted to WIN… The girls were in such good shape and I needed to up my game in order to be in with a chance to come in the top 2, but I was now competing with some seasoned athletes. I was much to my excitement given an invite to the NPA British Championships in Leamington Spa 2008’, the standard at the NPA Yorkshire Championships was so high! How excited was i?
I trained hard like id never done before, but I didn’t increase the number of sessions, just the intensity of the workouts. I worked harder and smarter in my workouts AND I STARTED TO SEE RESULTS, I kepted constant contact with my PT and trained with him 1-2 per month during the summer.
I was looking good but as the weeks came by I had highs and lows of motivation and diet boredom, sometimes why am I doing this?…why cant I eat chocolate?..... especially when I had PMT…or when my son and hubby were eating what I called treat foods…. I started to research several competitions eyeing up fellow competitors … I remember thinking I didn’t look like them …

I had to keep my motivation levels up …bringing my mind back into focus. But most of all needed to have fire in my belly , I watched the championship dvd’s back, I analysed what I need to improve on in comparison to other figure girls and then tailored my training around that from June – Oct….my diet stayed the same, eating 6 times per day, with the same food everyday, wit 1 treat meal per week ntil I had 2 weeks t go then it was no treats at all… I supplemented my diet with many different products, creatine, glutamine, meal replacements everyday for over 12 weeks…it was beginning to drive me mad….but again I had to focus on what I wanted throughout….
Id trained the hardest, I diet and done all I need to do on the day of the British Final, I couldn’t do anymore it was all down to the judges….
I felt confident and I just had to give the ‘Its Show Time attitude’ this is it, this is what id trained for….
I placed 2nd in the UK NPA British Trained Figure 2008
I also won best presentation 2008
I was over the moon….. id beaten my personal targets…I had in my head top 3 & Best Presentation…also I wanted to place higher than my fellow competitors that surpassed me in the qualifiers…. And I did that too…
Overall –
I’ve set myself some hard targets for next year and I’m hoping that I surpass them too, but I cant do that unless im totally focused on the task in hand,
‘If success is the top, you may see failure on the way’
Turn your failure into a stepping stone like I did and you may achieve so much more in your life.
I’m back to eating normal food…..lol but its made me realise you are what you eat I look at pictures and I cant believe that it’s the same person, yes I was in good shape , but now I’m in the shape of my life and I don’t want to loose that so I’m going to have to work hard during my off season, to get the edge to qualify for the ‘British Final’ Next Year to gain that Trained Figure British Title…..
I look back over the last 5 months and its been hard and very challenging, physically and mentally, but its been worth it I look a million dollars, if you have a dream and wish you had done something, id say go for it or you’ll never forgive yourself if you don’t
