Life and Hard work
by Kris Sutcliffe

My name is Kris Sutcliffe, who is a 5'9" 14 stone gym rat, who loves to train. My training life started at 17 when I walked into Ian Duckett's Future Bodies Gym and my life changed forever. Through Ian's guidance and training discipline I learnt the basics and fundamentals of strength training and how to pick up a barbell and do something with it. Another lesson I learnt is that hard work counts for something and you get out exactly what you put in. Another term that I got from this was shit in shit out, and if you train like crap, you look like, well you know the rest.

I remember in those early days, Ian giving me a hard time about how badly I had done my last set and making me do the set again, but correctly this time! Boy did that sink in with me, I mean why bother doing the set again if I did it right the first time, I wouldn't have to do it again. Simple but effective you might say. One of the main things I have learnt from training for the last 17 years, mostly heavy as hell, and that is keep it simple! Don't complicate the issue in hand, by training too advanced and training with complicated techniques and trying to work out what to do before you even work out what you will get out of it. Bench press, deadlift and squats and other basics for other smaller body parts will keep you improving and will improve your strength while allowing you to improve your form and technique and not allowing you to cheat to get the desired weight you are after. By cheating and not working hard, you will only cheat yourself, not improve and the only thing that will improve is your ego! Don't get me wrong, advanced training through correct guidance from Ian is just as good for others as Ian makes it simple for you to understand and do. Me, I like to keep it simple, period!

Around 9 years ago I hurt my neck and it took me 2/3 years to get back on the horse as it were. I love training, my training partner (Martin Shippin), has helped me as much as what Ian did when I first started out in motivation, idea's and keeping my head out of the clouds, while also making me improve and my basics and getting stronger. I recently sought and gained advice from the Dinosaur himself, Brooks Kubic, who has given me some valuable advice in getting past my current sticking point. Plus, working with Ian again last April at the Old School workshop, gave me the desire, knowledge and confidence to improve even more. I may not look much and I have always put myself down, but I feel I can lift and train with the best of them and I am stronger than I look, which has helped my confidence like nothing else could.

Remember, train hard, train wise but still keep things simple and always remember the basics and foundation of training. Weight training will not only help you physically in life, but it will also help you mentally to focus, work hard and to get things done as the confidence you will get will keep you going. Put everything into it and the world is your oyster and nothing will stop you.

For who I am at the moment in a physical and mental state, my thanks to Martin and Ian for there continued support and guidance over the years.

Thanks
Kris
