 The Most Common Question???
  By John Heaton

As soon as I get introduced as a Personal Trainer, I always get asked certain questions. I am sure that other professionals such as lawyers or doctors are also inundated with people wanting a bit of free advice but I am sure that trainers and physiotherapists get more questions than most due to their everyday contact with people from every walk of life.

The questions can vary from person to person but there does seem to be a common theme.

Men always want to know how to get rid of their gut.

Women always want to make their backside smaller or firmer.

There are some exceptions of course such as the ectomorphic male (thin, can eat any old junk sort of guy) that wants to know the best way to bulk up or the middle aged woman that hates the backs of her arms (bingo wings or dinner ladies arms).

By far though, the most common questions are related to losing body fat.

As someone myself that spent some time being overweight and wondering why, I can empathise somewhat. I did however apply the small amount of common sense that I have been blessed with and simply 'cleaned up' my diet and lo and behold, I lost 2 stone in a relatively short period of time.

Since joining the fitness industry I have studied fitness and nutrition for the past 10 years. I am forever researching the latest exercise and dietary research and I feel that my knowledge on the subject is reasonable, but back in 1997 when I lost 2 stone I had no real knowledge and was working as an Insurance Claims Handler.

I worked out that if I simply ate only healthy, regular food and exercised 3-4 x per week I would be on the right track. I was right.   I went from 38inch waist 16 stone, to 34 inch waist 14 stone. I never read a diet book, browsed a celebrity magazine or searched the web   (I had never heard of the internet in 1997).

I just had cereal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, a decent evening meal and snacked on apples. I drank only water and the odd coffee mid week and limited my weekend indulgences to a take away and a few beers on Saturday night and a Sunday dinner.

My weekday's food looked something like this

Meal 1 - 3 x Weetabix with semi skimmed milk

Meal 2 Wholemeal Ham/Turkey salad bread cake (no mayo and no butter)

Meal 3 - Wholemeal pasta or rice, chicken/fish/mince with a tomato sauce and vegetable. I ate an apple mid morning and mid afternoon to keep me away from the vending machine.

Not as strict or carbohydrate controlled as my current diet but it worked.

3 Meals a day and 2 snacks, SIMPLE!!

If you are one of those people that are tempted to ask a Personal Trainer how to lose the gut or get rid of the batwings, just pause and ask yourself, you know the answer.
